The “Protect Marriage” Campaign will be presenting a petition containing more than 70,000 signatures to the Select Committee hearing submissions on the Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment Bill tomorrow.
The statement signed by 72,000 people from around NZ and from all ‘walks of life’ says “I support the definition of marriage in New Zealand being maintained as one man one woman. I oppose any attempt to redefine it.”
“This is an incredible response considering it’s not part of a formal Referendum, and it certainly shows the level of public opposition to the bill. And the signatures continue to come in,” says Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ.
“We’re stoked that based on per head of population, our petition has exceeded similar petitions fighting against the redefinition of marriage in the UK and Australia. Our aim is to gain 100,000 signatures and to encourage politicians not to pass the bill.”
The petition was originally presented in Parliament with 48,000 signatures at the time of the 1st Reading, but the signatures have continued to pour in. 620,000 have signed a similar petition in the United Kingdom while a petition in Australia gained over 125,000 signatures.
