A petition opposing the legalisation of same sex marriage has drawn more than 70,000 signatures, says lobby group Family First. The petition will be handed to the select committee for the marriage amendment bill today, in a bid to stop the bill from going ahead. Labour MP Louisa Wall’s Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment Bill is currently before a select committee, which will report to parliament on February 28. If passed, it could see gay marriage legalised by May next year. The committee has received over 20,000 submissions on the bill. However, lobby group Family First says there is strong opposition to the bill and a statement signed by 72, 000 people proves that. Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ said, “This is an incredible response considering it’s not part of a formal Referendum, and it certainly shows the level of public opposition to the bill. And the signatures continue to come in.”
